Karrin was eleven years old on the day when she told her father, right before he left for work, that when she grew up, she'd be a policeman, just like him. It was right then that her baby sister started crying suddenly and Collin was distracted and didn't have time to respond at all before he had to leave, running hard to the car because there was a call. That didn't impress his little girl much, the lack of reaction. He'd be back in the evening, and they'd talk about it. They always did, when things were important.
And this was important. She knew how much it mattered to him, every day. She'd started on aikido lessons a couple of weeks ago, and her teacher had already impressed on them that what they learned, they had to use for the right reasons, and she knew there was nothing more right than what her dad did.
She looked forward to the evening the entire day; as the sun set, she was getting restless, waiting for him to return. Her daddy. Her hero. She knew he'd be back when he could too, so she tried to be calm. She took out her soap-bubbles plastic set, and started to blow bubbles for Lisa, making the baby follow them and smile her little smile, as though it was the must amazing thing in her life. The smile she smiled a hundred times a day.
The phone rang and her mom answered it, while Karrin was first blowing up the transparent spheres, then keeping them clear of her sister's face and hands. Soap didn't taste exactly nice, and she didn't want the infant to cry and distract their mom from her conversation. She was old enough to keep the baby entertained for a few minutes.
The door had remained ajar, which was the only reason Karrin heard the slightly louder, slightly hysterical words. "No... Ed, that can't be true, he can't be dead! He can't be!"
The bubble fell on Lisa's face and popped silently. The baby sneezed. Which was the only sound to be heard in the room.

Date: 2008-02-25 09:34 pm (UTC)Can't resist using favourite icon for ooc!Thank you! I'm probably just nibbling at my writer's block (ahem. well, four pieces in one day - but still nibbles!) but I am very glad it works! It's interesting to build a muse up from a kid...
Thanks a bunch!
